History of Mother’s Day

When and where did the true Mother’s Day begin? – A question for which many people need to know the answer. So let’s plunge into the details!

The tradition of honoring mothers existed even from the times of ancient Greeks and Romans, who worshipped the mother goddesses known as Rhea and Cybele. Rhea is the Greek goddess, and Cybele is her Roman equivalent. 

The American Mother’s Day dates back to the years before the Civil War. Ann Marie Jarvis, from West Virginia, arranged “Mother’s Day Work Clubs,” which guided the local women, including single mothers, to take care of their kids and families more efficiently. Following the Civil War, people, especially women, went through lots of hardships, and the clubs started by Jarvis worked towards reconciliation and world peace. 

After the death of Ann Marie Jarvis in 1905, her devoted daughter, Anna Jarvis began the Mother’s Day tradition, as a way of celebrating moms’ sacrifices for their children. In 1914, the day was declared a public holiday. So it took Anna Jarvis around 9 years to campaign and promote the day in the US! 

When Is Mother’s Day?

Following the efforts of Anna Jarvis, President Woodrow Wilson signed a contract that stated Mother’s Day would be celebrated on the second Sunday of May. 

In more than 40 countries, people observe this important day on different dates. In the UK, it is celebrated 3 weeks before Easter. In Costa Rica, Thailand, and Georgia, It is declared a public holiday. Some nations observe this special day in March.

As stated earlier, people in the US commonly celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. They buy their moms and grandmoms goodies they like and shower them with presents.
