How to Tackle Lip Pigmentation?

Who will say no to pink lips? Every woman wishes to have soft pink lips. Additionally, plumpy rosy lips will add more glam to your beauty and make your smile more attractive. However, due to some unhealthy habits, the lips become dry and dark causing pigmentation.

What Causes Lip Pigmentation?

Melanin is a pigment that gives colour to your skin. People with more melanin have darker skin compared to those who have lesser. If the production of melanin exceeds more than the limit it may lead to hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation creates dark patches on the skin, and it can affect any part of the body including the lips.

Causes of Lip Hyperpigmentation

  • Sun exposure
  • Dehydration
  • Smoking
  • Excessive intake of caffeine
  • Lip sucking
  • Medical condition
  • Allergic reactions to cosmetics

Implementing some lifestyle changes like reducing caffeine intake, changing toothpaste and wearing sunscreen may help reduce pigmentation.

Ways to Lighten Dark Lips

Cosmetic products are available to treat hyperpigmentation. Chemicals, laser treatments and home remedies will aid in reducing lip pigmentation. These hyperpigmentation treatments work by restraining an enzyme that produces melanin. Though plenty of cosmetics are available to treat hyperpigmentation, some prefer natural remedies to treat. Here are some useful DIY remedies.

Homemade Honey Scrub

Exfoliators can remove dead skin cells. Use the following homemade scrub to exfoliate.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • Gently rub the mixture on your  lips and wash it off with warm water

Apply Lemon Juice

Lemon is one of the most accessible skin-lightening treatments. The citric acid help remove the dead skin.

Cut a lemon slice, gently rub it on your lips and wash it with warm water after an hour.

Oil Massage

Oil massages help moisturize the lips, and boost blood circulation. Massaging stimulates the blood flow to the area and which will give your lips natural colour. All you need is good-quality almond oil or coconut oil, gently massage the oil on the lip frequently. Oils are the best natural remedy to enhance the skin’s radiance.

Aloe vera

The natural compound in aloe vera inhibits melanin production. Apply the fresh aloe vera gel on the lips and rinse it with warm water.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is used to treat various conditions. To treat dark patches, dilute apple cider vinegar in the water and dab it on your lips. Leave it for 10 -15 minutes and wash it.  The acidic properties of apple cider vinegar will lighten lip pigmentation.

Rose Water

Combine 1 tablespoon of rosewater with 2 tablespoons of honey, and apply this mixture to the lips. Apply this mixture before bedtime for better results.

Beetroot Juice

Beetroot is rich in antioxidant properties. Rubbing a beetroot slice will make the lips soft and supple. Additionally, beetroot will reduce the tan and provide a pink glow to the lips.

Retinol

The anti-pigmentation ingredient in retinol will help reduce dark patches. Use it overnight to see good results.

Stay hydrated and moisturize your lips often.  Sun exposure, smoking, and harsh chemicals can easily affect the sensitive skin on your lips. So, taking proper care is essential. Eat a balanced diet, exfoliate your lips and moisturize often for better results.
