Tips to handle clawing habit of your cat

We can see a wide range of pets kept in the families around us. The most common ones are cats and dogs. Cats are known for their companionship and they can hunt the household pest or rodents. Cats are easy to pet and take very less space compared to other pets. They have small and sharp teeth to kill the prey, very strong and flexible body, sharp claws and quick reflexes. Cats can smell much more times better than human beings, but their color vision is very poor.

Cats are called social pets, but sometimes while growing up cats can do harm and damage your property or things in your house by clawing.  Clawing process is said to sharpen the claws. Most of the times the cat may do it to sharpen the claws. Also the cats have a type of glands in their paws, which gets activated and release a scent to express their presence to the other cats and animals.

A few efforts may protect your furniture and household things from the clawing habit. One has to understand that the cat does not claw for fun, she has been made that way that she needs to claw. It is the Mother Nature who has made the cat with the claws and it is natural and a need to sharpen them.

Here are some tips to handle your cat’s clawing habits

  1. Buy a scratching post for the cat and keep it in the areas where she sits or spends her day most of the time. Children can make the scratching post at home also for their loved pet.  Train the cat to use the scratching post as it will sharpen her claws and you will save the furniture from damaging. Place the post in the favorite area of the house place it in the place where someone will not topple over.
  2. Just think about the height of the cat and select a soft post. Even if you are making it at home, don’t make it too rough, so that the cats will injure her claws. Also keep in mind the post should not be too heavy or too short. It will be like a toy for the cat so make it keeping her in mind.
  3. Use your voice to command her and she should understand that a No word means that no more scratching of furniture. Simply train her to follow the instructions. If the cat is scratching the post, don’t disturb her at the very same moment as she scratches it with all her pleasant and happy memories and you may interrupt her.
  4. If you have a water spray, use it for the training the cat. Whenever she goes near the things which you don’t want to scratch, spray some water on her to distract her. This will not hurt the cat and will help the cat understand that this is not the place to scratch.
  5. Cover the furniture which you feel that the cat may claw and you don’t want to ruin the look of the furniture. Use double sided tape as they hate sticky things.

With the above tips and little efforts, you can surely handle clawing habits of your cat.
