Things you should never say to your teenage kids

Parenting is a tricky game and it has become more critical and complex when you have teenage kids at home. Teenagers understand everything you speak and everything you do.

Often parents have to be very careful during communication with teenagers. Talking to teenagers without conflict is necessary. At a certain point, a few things may damage their thinking and may not be good for your family. There are some parent-teen communication strategies you should follow to encourage teens to express themselves.

How to Maintain Healthy Parent-teen Relationships?

If you are a parent of a teen, you must face various frustrating situations. Building trust with teens is essential for parents. How to develop a healthy relationship with your teenage son? Instilling confidence, finding time to talk, and managing discipline are beneficial for a positive relationship.

But, a few things should never be said to your kids, as they may feel hurt, angry, or confused. Here are a few things never say in your home to manage positive communication with teenagers.

You’re So Lazy. You’re Such a Slob

This is a negative label that makes your teens feel worse about themselves. Instead, you can focus on the positive talks with teenagers such as ‘You’re smart’, and ‘You’re such an athlete.’

It helps them find ways to be more productive.

I’m Tired of Your Attitude

Telling your emotions to the teen is not a wise decision. When they are upset, you must ask them gently and firmly. You must find essential ways to overcome their difficulties.

You’re Not Telling Me the Truth

Why do teens lie and how to deal with them? Your kid may lie due to a lack of trust, strict rules, and lack of communication. If you don’t believe your teen, it’s essential to talk to them about why you don’t believe them. Accusing them of lying will make them less likely to trust you.

You Do Not Have the Right to Speak to Me That Way

Teens have the right to talk to their parents. Freedom of speech is the right to speak anything they desire. However, a level of respect is important when speaking to others. This allows parents to make proper communication with teenagers and they open up without any fear.

I Never Wanted You

Another cruel and hurtful thing to say to anyone, let alone a teenager. If you have ever said this to your teen, please apologize and try to rebuild your relationship. It causes emotional damage to your child.

You’re Too Young to Understand

This is a way of dismissing your teen’s feelings and opinions. Instead, try to see things from their perspective and listen to what they have to say.  Open dialogue with adolescents paves the way for their growth and development.

Why Do I Have to Tell You Everything a Thousand Times?

This may impact the personality of the child and cause a change in behavior such as anger and frustration. You must convince your teen in a positive way and make them understand every situation. It is essential to correct them through effective communication and guidance.

Look at the Neighbor’s Child

In most families, if the child is not doing well, their parents compare them with other kids. Comparing your kid with others is the wrong way and it doesn’t motivate them. A comparison may be depressing, disheartening, and annoying.

When I Was Your Age

It’s better not to say like this way. The child will get more annoyed when a parent says ‘Look what I did when I was your age..’ Comparing them with your past day is irrelevant and they will not accept it all.

Grow Up

A child’s behavior is part of their growth and learning. You don’t need to tell them to grow up separately. Using foul language, smoking, fighting, and talking disrespectfully are things you should never do infront of kids.

It’s important to remember that teenagers are going through a lot of changes, both physically and emotionally. They’re trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in the world.
