Dry Brushing denotes gentle brushing on the skin to exfoliate the skin, stimulate the lymphatic system, and improve blood circulation. This cosmetic procedure is done with the help of a dry stiff-bristled brush. It is an ancient Ayurvedic method introduced in India. The practitioners still follow this method for exfoliation treatment in a specific pattern to stimulate the cells. Besides the removal of dead skin cells, this technique enhances the skin texture by clearing the toxins from the pores.
Dry brushing is referred to as physical exfoliation which involves scrubbing the dry brush on your skin. Though this technique sounds complicated, it eliminates the dead skin cells instantly. Moreover, dry brushing reduces dead skin build-up by allowing new cells to grow. When you remove the dirt, the skin becomes smoother and starts to glow. However, it may disturb the temporary barriers (Keratinocytes and Keratin). Since your skin naturally contains moisture, dry brushing the cells may make them dryer.
The lymph nodes protect you from harmful bacteria and infections. When it gets affected, it causes swelling in the arms and legs called Lymphedema. By massaging the dry brush in a circular motion, the lymph fluid and the swelling will be reduced. A gentle massage on the body will eliminate the toxins through the sweat. The rough bristle rubs the skin and opens up the pores.
No research has stated that dry brushing would stimulate blood circulation. However, dry brushing is more similar to massage so it may stimulate the blood vessels. Regular massages will improve the oxygen supply and increase the blood flow to your skin. It will enhance the radiance of your skin and make you look bright.
Cellulite is a common skin condition that arises on the thigh, butt, and stomach. The affected areas look lumpy, rippled, and dimpled. Dry brushing on the area may reduce the appearance but won’t completely cure cellulite. The dry bristles on the brush improve blood circulation and retain its plumpness for a certain time.
According to scientific evidence, there’s no proof that dry brushing cures cellulite. It may help some people, but it does not provide a permanent cure.
People who feel depressed can try dry brushing. Most people feel energized and invigorated following the technique. You will feel refreshed throughout the day, after dry brushing. Moreover, it increases your energy levels and makes you feel better.
Dry brushing is an easy DIY self-care method. You can use a natural dry brush with soft and dense bristles. Avoid using plastic brush as it might be rough on the skin. Use a long-handle dry brush so that you can easily reach your back.
Finally, dry off and apply any natural oils like olive, or coconut oil
Though dry brushing clears dirt and toxins from your skin, overdoing it may damage the skin. Overdry brushing or using hard dry brushes will turn the skin red and cause abrasions.
Remember that dry brushing should make you feel relaxed, it should not burn or cause irritation.
Dry brushing will make the skin more dry. Try applying any essential oils or moisturizer after using the brush.
Those who have skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, rashes, wounds, sunburns, or any irritation should avoid dry brushing. If your skin is sensitive or allergic to scrubbing do not try this method.
As you are using the brush to clean the toxins on the skin, the bacteria could stick to the bristles. So wash the dry brush using soap after every use. Dry it as soon as you wash it, do not let it wet for more hours.
Dry brushing has many benefits but still needs to be done carefully. You can include this with your skincare routine to get soft and smooth skin. Add this tool to your skin care essentials for the best results. However, check if this method works for you, if you have any allergies, kindly consult your doctor.
