5 Mistakes We Make While Applying Eyeliner

Eyeliner makeup might be a small cosmetic, but it adds more definition to your face. It highlights the eyes by either making them look smaller or bigger. Eyeliner is a simple tool but not easy. One must have eyeliner techniques, skills, and patience, especially, to avoid common eyeliner application blunders. Keep these things in mind before buying or applying one.

Mistakes to Avoid in Eyeliner Routine

Selecting the Wrong Type of Eyeliner

People buy eyeliners without considering their type and nature. But one must know the types before bagging them. Three major types of eyeliners are available: pencil, gel, and liquid. Each one has different features, so be mindful while selecting. If you are a beginner opt for pencil eyeliner, as it doesn’t require much effort. Gel eyeliner allows you to create multiple looks but can be challenging to use and needs to be unshaken while applying. To avoid eyeliner mistakes, pick the right style based on your skills.

Don’t Overdo the Lines

Some like thick lines, while some prefer delicate ones. Always determine the thickness of the line before applying. Don’t overdo the lines in order to create a thick line, or else it may ruin the look. If you want a natural eye look, stick to thin lines, apply the narrow line on the upper part of the lashes, and avoid the bottom line. Go with softer/ lighter shades like brown or black.

Using Dried-Eye Pencils

Avoid using dried-eye pencils, as they may leave skid marks on the eyes. Since they have lost moisture, they won’t provide an even finish. Henceforth, choose an eyeliner with a creamy or glossy texture that dries after applying.

Don’t Curl Lashes After Applying

Avoid curling the lashes after applying the eyeliner, as it will pull out the cosmetic. Curl the lashes before you begin with the liner.

Tilted Head

Usually, people tilt their heads before applying the eyeliner, which will give a slanted line or a wrong one. Keeping your head straight will help create a straight or subtle eyeliner look.

How Do You Fix Eyeliner Mistakes?

No matter how hard you try to achieve precision in eyeliner, smudging can happen here and there. Follow these tips if you end up with an eyeliner breakdown next time.

  • Take a cotton ball and cleanser, soak the ball with a small amount of cleanser, and remove it. Re-apply once the eyelashes have dried.
  • In case the eyeliner smudges near the eyebrow bone or the eyeliner is too thick, use concealer with a light brush to conceal the overdone part.
  • Petroleum jelly also can be used to wipe out smudged eyeliner. Similar to the micellar water, use a cotton bud to apply over the area and remove slowly.
  • Additionally, use a Q-tip to adjust the excess eyeliner and the shape of the uneven application.

How Do You Apply Eyeliner Properly?

Here are some eyeliner application tips to enhance your eyeliner skills.

Prepare your eyes. Apply makeup primer on the eyelids before doing the eyeliner; it will make the liner stay longer.

Apply eyeliner on the upper eyelid. Pull the upper eyelid, bring the eyeliner close, and draw a thin line from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eye. Apply two to three coats if you want thick eyeliner. To create a winged eyeliner, stretch the eyeliner at an upward angle from the outer corner of the eye and fill the line thickly to achieve perfection.

Apply eyeliner to the lower lid. Bring the eyeliner close to the lower lid, and draw a thin line from the outer corner to the inner corner of the eyelid. Draw a straight line at the two-thirds of the eyelid to make it bigger.

Join the lines that meet at the end of the outer corner of the eyes.

Give the final touch. Use eyeshadow on the eyeliner to make it stay for longer hours. Apply the same color of the eyeliner.

Applying eyeliner is a subtle task, but when you start perfecting your eyeliner techniques, you can avoid problems with eyeliner applications.
